Message from the Gun Safety Workshop: Our Interfaith Gun Safety Work Group’s next meeting is Monday, March 28th, at 1:30 p.m. in the meeting room of the administration room. ALL are welcome!

*This month’s meeting included members of St. Patrick’s, Incarnation Episcopal Church, and Veterans for Peace.

*Our VISION is the elimination of gun violence in the US.

*Our MISSION is to reduce gun violence through education, legislation, media, local action, partnership with other faith communities, and connection with existing groups which advocate for gun safety.

*FYI, an important lawsuit came to a CT. court this week, brought by the 9 families of the 20 first-graders and 6 staff members slaughtered at Sandy Hook Elementary School in 2012. The weapon used was an assault-style AR-15 rifle, and the killer used it to fire 150 bullets in 264 seconds.

The families have brought lawsuit against the manufacturer of the assault-style gun, its distributor, and the gun shop selling the weapon. They assert this was “negligent entrustment” of an assault weapon to the civilian population, and that the companies “had ample reason to know that flooding the civilian market with assault rifles carried unreasonable risks…having designed the gun to “inflict maximum damage…in a short time”, having “marketed its AR-15s with overt allusions to mass killing power”.

If the judge allows the case to proceed, sworn depositions will follow concerning the manufacturer’s “marketing practices and their specific knowledge about the lethality of their weapons”. Since 2005 the industry of gun and ammunition manufacture, marketing, and sale has enjoyed being completely exempt from having any lawsuit brought against it or even being subject to the Environmental Protection Agency (because of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act). http://www.thenation.com/article/can-sandy-hook-families-hold-the-gun-industry-accountable/
