Senior Warden’s Letter April 2017

Senior Warden’s Letter
By Ann Peters

There is so much happening at St. Patrick’s. Here are some highlights:

Our Easter services were joyful and well-attended. Special thanks to Barbara Klingbeil and the members of the Altar and Flower Guilds. The church looked beautiful with a profusion of lilies and bright spring flowers. Remember that Easter lasts 50 days, so you can still experience all the beauty and celebration of the season. Thank you, Diane Melder, choir, and musicians for your beautiful and moving hymns and solos. I can’t remember when we had a bagpiper at an Easter service before. As Rev. Jen said, it really woke us up! Thanks to trumpeter Peter Estabrook as well. It was inspiring.

The Kenwood Farmers Market is coming back to St. Patrick’s for the summer. It will run on Sundays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., from June 4 to Sept. 24. This is one hour earlier than last year’s market. Thanks to Junior Warden Andy Robart for spearheading the negotiations with Kelly Smith from the farmers market. On a side note, Kelly loved being in Kenwood last year so much that she moved here!

Bob Wohlsen is the new chair of the Stewardship committee, and on behalf of the Vestry, I would like to thank him for taking on this crucial role. Our finances are dependent on your pledges and we’re grateful to all of you, not only for pledging, but for following through with payments. Let us all continue to show our love for this church with our time, talent and treasure.

The newly formed Engagement and Growth Committee has been calling parishioners to find out what people want and need from St. Patrick’s. If you haven’t been called yet, you will be soon. The committee is working very hard and we thank them. One of the most frequent requests is for more fellowship opportunities, and if there’s one thing we can do at St. Patrick’s, it’s get together for food and fellowship!

Which brings me to welcoming. Please reach out to visitors and new people. We are known for our warmth and welcoming here at St. Patrick’s. If someone you don’t know is sitting nearby, why not introduce yourself? The Peace is a perfect time for a quick hello.

We will be having a Newcomers’ Dinner on June 3, so if you are new to St. Patrick’s in the last two years, please join in. The Stewardship and Welcoming committees will be identifying “new” people, but please feel free to let us know if you’d like to be included. The dinner will be at my house here in Kenwood, and as far as I’m concerned, the more the merrier!

Update on Call Process

Finally, we submitted our Parish Profile to the Bishop’s office on April 18. Once the Bishop approves it, the position will be posted on the Diocese’s website, and we will also share the profile with all of you. In case you are unfamiliar, we are in the process of calling a permanent rector to St. Patrick’s. Our Priest-in-charge Jen+ can apply for the position if she chooses to do so. This is a Diocesan-directed process, and we are following the necessary steps that will lead us to our end goal of identifying the next rector of St. Patrick’s.

Once applications have been received, the Applicant Review Committee (ARC) will begin the work of screening them. This is a process that requires prayer, discernment, and a lot of work, including Skype interviews and traveling to visit candidates. When their work is done, the ARC will present three or four finalists to the vestry, who will do their own interviews, etc., and then make the decision on who to call. The work of the ARC is completely confidential, so please don’t ask anyone any questions. They will not be able to tell you how many applicants there are, where they come from, if they are male or female… anything. We are many months away from identifying and calling a permanent rector, and we ask you to have faith in the ARC and Vestry, and to please pray for everyone involved.

We will keep you informed of all milestones along the way.

In the meantime, Happy Easter!

Peace and love,
Ann

Vestry Update

Thank to everyone who came to the annual meeting on Feb. 5. It was a great turnout with an overall very positive vibe. Thank you, Charlie Chapman, for providing us with our 2017 budget and explaining it so thoroughly. Thank you to Russ Engle and the Stewardship Committee for shepherding us through the pledging process, and especially to Russ for making so many follow-up phone calls. We are blessed to have received almost $10,000 more in 2016 than was pledged, and for 2017 pledges totaling $204,000, which is $6,000 more than we originally budgeted. Your contributions, no matter what amount you are able to give, are an indicator of your love and concern for St. Patrick’s. We literally could not do what we do without these monies, so “Thank You!”

All things come of thee, O Lord, and of thine own have we given thee.

Our new vestry met immediately following the annual meeting, and we elected Andy Robart to be our Junior Warden. Thank you, Andy! We also welcomed Viva McKenzie onto the vestry as our newest member. The nine-member vestry normally has a three-person turnover each year, and we’ve gotten off track with that but are hoping this year to steer it back to the normal rotation. We will keep you posted.

The vestry meets on the third Friday of the month, starting at 11 a.m., and we had our first regular meeting on Feb. 17. Here are the highlights:

1) We considered a proposal from Miriam Casey to create a more formal structure for engagement and growth in our parish, to be called the Engagement and Growth Committee. This committee will develop relationships with parishioners to better understand what they need and what they want from St. Patrick's – two different things. Within the context of these relationships, we will also identify what the special talents of parishioners are and what they might like to lead. From that information, we will have data that is actionable, so we know what new fellowship groups to form, who wants to participate, and who wants to lead. The sense of the vestry is that this a good and timely proposal and we’ll move forward with it, including discussing it further at our vestry retreat on March 4.

2) We discussed how outreach is funded, and reaffirmed that Outreach needs to be line item in the budget. It is not the responsibility of the Outreach Committee to raise their own funds. In the past, it just so happened that Jean Derum was head of Outreach and also spearheaded our fall fundraisers, but we want to make it clear that any fundraising we undertake is the responsibility of the entire congregation, for the benefit of St. Patrick’s. In other words, all hands on deck! And, speaking of which, mark your calendar for Saturday, Oct. 7 for a big Pasta and Bingo Party.

3) Adult Education is happening! The vestry reviewed the schedule of classes put together by Miriam Casey, Marcia Tyriver, Karen King, Judith Kesot, Laurie Boone Hogen and Rev. Jen
– many thanks to them for organizing and scheduling these classes. The classes are listed on our website and posted on the bulletin boards and in the Sunday bulletin. There was a fascinating “Introduction to Islam” on Feb. 12 during the 9 and 10:30 services. This happened to coincide with the guitar mass, which was so inspiring and beautiful. Thank you, Kate Aldrich, for organizing it, and thank you to all the guitarists– there were many! In March, Jen+ and Deacon Marcia Tyriver will teach instructed Eucharist during the services, which should be interesting for both long-time Episcopalians and those of us who are new to this church, or any church. Other classes will take place at 9:15 and 10:15 on Sundays, to allow as many of us as possible to attend. Please support them.

4) We looked forward to the Feb. 26 meeting with Canon Andrea McMillan to discuss the results of the Holy Cow survey, which will have taken place by the time you read this letter in the Grapevine. We understand that parishioners have a variety of opinions about where St. Patrick’s is headed, and where it should be headed as we embark upon the search for a permanent rector. But one thing we all agree on is that we expect everyone to treat one another with love, kindness and respect throughout the process.

5) We will have a one-day Vestry Retreat on March 4 at the home of Senior Warden Ann Peters in Kenwood. Please pray for Rev. Jen+, your vestry, and everyone in any kind of leadership role here at St. Patrick’s. We are confident that God is with us and guiding us.

Anti-Racism training Saturday, March 11, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m

St. Patrick's Episcopal Church, Kenwood, is fortunate to offer a day of anti-racism training Saturday, March 11, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

The trainers and program come from our diocesan Commission for Intercultural Ministry, headed by the personable Rev. Lewis Sitting Panther Powell (Deacon), Indigenous Ministries Missioner, Diocese of Northern California.

There will be small group discussions, videos, Bible study, prayer, and sharing to help us better understand key concepts and wrestle with issues of power and privilege, culture, structural and institutional racism, and where God calls us to be brothers and sisters in this multicultural church and culture. Lunch will be provided.

Registration is limited.  To register, phone the church office 707-833-4228 by Monday, Feb. 27.  Registration fee of $20 is to be paid by check to St. Patrick's Episcopal Church.

Per action taken at the 2009 General Convention (Resolution A142), all Episcopal clergy and lay leaders are expected to receive and periodically renew such training.

For more information, contact Miriam Casey (707-833-2129) or Deacon Marcia Tyriver (707-537-9355).

T-Coil System in Sanctuary

Ross of Kenwood Hearing Center has fixed the wiring of our T-Coil system. The Secret Santa tree is up in Stevenson Hall for the second year at St. Patricks. Please open your heart and select a heart or two to fulfill a modest wish for a child, a young adult, and yes even a lonely senior citizen. Each heart represents a member of our community who is experiencing difficulties that a warm pair of slippers, a small toy or even a gift card will make their Christmas better. Place your wrapped gift back under the tree no later than December 15th. A team of St. Patrick's elves will deliver your gifts to the Volunteer Center. PLEASE DON'T FORGET TO PEAL OFF LABLE AND ATTACH TO PACKAGE. Return hearts to basket in Stevenson Hall near the Christmas tree.

** Would Like Your Help This Holiday Season!

You can donate to the Holiday Meat Program in a couple of ways. As we are all aware our local G & G Markets has been purchased by Safeway and will be closing the stores as of December 1st. G & G has been a key donor to F.I.S.H., providing a greatly reduced price and in some cases a straight donation of the holiday meat that is provided to families in our community. There is no indication that F.I.S.H. will be able to expect that participation for the December program. As a result, if anyone is interested in a monetary donation to the Holiday Meat Program please choose one of the following options that best works: 1. Write a check to St. Patrick’s: Outreach for Holiday Meat

  1. Write a check to F.I.S.H. of Santa Rosa marked for Holiday Meat. Mail to F.I.S.H. PO Box 4291 Santa Rosa, Ca 95402

Presented by Laurie Boone Hogen

A brief introduction to Christian Art in two sessions

Session One will begin with the changing images of Christ found in the art from the 3^rd Century through the Renaissance including the signs and symbols used to illustrate the Christian beliefs beginning with the Annunciation through the Flight into Egypt.

Session Two will tell the Christmas Story through works of art from the Metropolitan Museum of Art taken from the Gospels of Matthew and Luke.

Participants are encouraged to attend both sessions to get the most out of the meaning behind the Christian beliefs surrounding the Christmas story and the beauty of the art.

** Standing Rock

A few of weeks ago on Sunday Jen preached about Standing Rock. There was a call for clergy and ministers to get to Standing Rock by Thursday. Jen couldn't go, due to Diocesan Convention.Miriam Casey and Kendall Brown went to be in Standing Rock and join the 540+ ministers who showed our presence and solidarity. We already have a few supporters for their pilgrimage. You can contribute support to their trip, speak with Jen.

** LISTENING TO THE CONGREGATION

PREPARING FOR OUR RECTOR DISCERNMENT

On November 21 you were sent the Holy Cow! Survey link. This survey will provide a clear picture of who we are as a church and what directions are most important for our future, especially as we prepare for our Rector Discernment next year. While many of you have responded already, there are many more who have yet to fill in your survey form.

This is the opportunity for you to make your thoughts known! As you know, we will be interviewing candidates for Rector starting February and the results of this survey will be important for us to help frame what we are looking for in a Rector. Further, it will help candidates to better understand who we are as a congregation. Canon Andrea will review the results with the Vestry on December 14, so we urge you to fill in your online survey by December 8 to ensure your voice will count!

If you did not receive the original link, below is the link to open up the survey. If you have difficulty with filling it out online, please print it out, fill it in and either fax, mail or call it into the office, but you MUST do it by next Tuesday to be sure that we can resend it to Holy Cow! in time. Only one survey per parishioner, but if two parishioners share an email, they can each fill out the survey.

The final day of filling it out will be December 8, but the sooner you can do so, the better.

If you have any questions please contact one of us: Russ Engle, russengle@me.com (mailto:russengle@me.com) (707) 343-1249 or, Ann Peters, aerp23@gmail.com (mailto:aerp23@gmail.com) (707) 833-5524

** 2017 Pledges

We want to thank all of you who have made your 2017 pledge contribution to St. Patrick's Church. Many of you have chosen to increase your pledges, and for that we are extremely grateful. We are now two thirds of the way toward our goal for next year, a notable accomplishment. But, as in all fund raising efforts, it is the last third which is so vitally needed to 'take it over the top!' At this time, it is extremely important that we all stand behind our church. We need to provide a solid financial base to ensure that we can continue to be a vibrant, spiritual 'Beacon of Light, Love and Compassion in our Community.' Our congregation and shut ins need it; our community welcomes it.

To those of you who have yet to make your pledge, please consider it now.

If you need a pledge card, you may call the office (833-4228) to obtain one, or simply let Bobbiejo know your offering.

Thank you for all that you do for Saint Patrick's.

** LISTENING TO THE CONGREGATION

PREPARING FOR OUR RECTOR DISCERNMENT

This past week you were sent the initial announcement of our Holy Cow! Survey. This survey will provide a clear picture of who we are as a church and what directions are most important for our future, especially as we prepare for our Rector Discernment next year.

This is the opportunity for you to make your thoughts known! As you know, we will be interviewing candidates for Rector starting February and the results of this survey will be important for us to help frame what we are looking for in a Rector. Further, it will help candidates to better understand who we are as a congregation.

Below is the link to open up the survey. Please take the time this week, if you can, to sit down and fill out the answers of the questionnaire, it should take less than 25 minutes. If two parishioners share an email, they can each fill out the survey.

Again, by filling out this survey you can make your thoughts known! The final day of filling it out will be December 8, but the sooner you can do so, the better.

If you have any questions please contact one of us:

** LISTENING TO THE CONGREGATION

PREPARING FOR OUR RECTOR DISCERNMENT

As you know, we recently agreed to move forward with the “HolyCow!” consulting service as a key input in our Discernment Process. You have been selected to participate in the first step which is to conduct a congregational assessment. This assessment will provide a clear picture of who we are as a church and what directions are most important for our future. The tool we'll use is the Congregation Assessment Tool (CAT), which will provide key indicators of our congregational health along with areas of challenge and potential growth. This will help us to gain your insights into our congregation’s needs and goal and will help us to update our Parish Profile as part of our Rector Discernment. Within the next few days, you will receive a unique web link to complete the assessment online. If you would prefer to take the assessment using a paper copy, please stop by the office, and we will provide one for you along with a self-addressed stamped envelope. NOTE: If there is only one email address for all members of your household, it may be tempting to have one person take the survey on behalf of the family. However, please be sure your spouse and all young adults living in your home have an opportunity to complete the survey. INDIVIDUAL INPUT is key to our gaining insight into overall perceptions and experiences. Please set aside enough time to answer all the questions. This will take about 15 minutes. All survey responses are strictly anonymous. Thank you for your willingness to be a part of this congregational assessment and for helping to build St. Patrick’s future.

If you have questions, please contact a Warden:

F.I.S.H. of Santa Rosa

  2. For a convent electronic donation, use the F.I.S.H web site: http://stpatkenwood.us11.list-manage.com/track/click?u=dca7290da4d112fb71478288b&id=a9cab13dbc&e=bb9cca279b

** Roof Repair

There will be roof repair in the building where the Sanctuary is located. The construction begins the week of November 21st and will go on for about two weeks.

** Standing Rock

A couple of weeks ago on Sunday Jen preached about Standing Rock.

**

Thank you for 'lending your ears' this past Stewardship Sunday. Your presence and interest were most meaningful. I had been asked by several of you to share my words and I thought I would share them with all of you. Seeing the guild volunteers rise in the 9:00 service and, especially, come up to the Altar for recognition at the 10:30 service was extremely touching. They, and so many others working like them, are our heroes.

God Bless, Russ Engle St. Patrick's Guild Members

St. Patrick's Guild Members

Good Morning! Thank you all for coming on a cool, rainy day. Today is Stewardship Sunday, the beginning of our fundraising campaign for Saint Patrick’s. So this morning I have several tasks: First, to give my short epistle about what St. Patrick’s has come to mean to me. In the coming weeks more of you will follow with your own stories; your own thoughts about the importance of Saint Patrick’s in your lives; Second, to give a brief background to our Stewardship campaign, and Third, to honor service.

So first, to borrow a line from the movie Jerry McGuire with Tom Cruise, “You had me at Hello!”

When Claudette and I first came some six years ago, we felt the same way. We received the bread and wine and immediately felt this was a special welcome. But more than that, at coffee hour and as we came the following weeks, you, as a congregation, opened up to us. You sought us out after church and began to share your stories. Then came the first of many Saint Patrick’s Day feasts, and ECW luncheons. We never really felt that we were outsiders, needing years to ‘break into’ your special community, since so many of you extended your welcome. That was quite a different feeling from our church back home. Even after ten years, we knew fewer people there than we knew here in the first few months. Saint Patrick’s is a special place filled with very special people.

So, rather than just sit in the pews and enjoy my new church, I got involved: First with the ARC, then, with the Vestry and finally with the Stewardship committee among others. But the more I got involved, the more I began to see how so many of you contribute so much of your time, your talents and, indeed, your treasure to help support our church. It is your level of service, of care and of contribution to St. Patrick’s that struck me most as the measure of your Christian spirit. I am proud of you for that, and proud to be a member of St. Patrick’s Church. That leads me to my second task: to talk briefly about our Stewardship campaign.

Stewardship Campaign:

Last year I said to you that we had been forced to draw down from our long-term assets almost $60,000, with a good portion of that due to a shortfall in pledge receipts vs. pledges given. So I asked you then to reflect on what role St. Patrick’s played in your life and, if you believed that it was an important resource, that it was an important ‘Spiritual Home’ for you and your family, then to consider how you might contribute to it to help keep it vibrant. And I thank you! You responded with pledges over 7% higher than the year before, the first increase in several years. Further, you have kept your pledge. Unlike in 2015, we are tracking right on your pledge offering through September. Please stay the course. Further, a dozen of you have prepaid your pledges for the year, helping greatly with our cash flow and two dozen of you have been paying without a pledge, giving us hope in your belief in us for the future. But our financial situation is still fragile. We turned the corner this year, but only just! The good news is that we have had a much greater influx of new visitors and, subsequently, new members during the year. Next year, though, we face the Rector search, the need to enhance our music program, to support our Outreach and to address delayed maintenance. Frankly, now is the time we all need to come together as a congregation. Working, praying and contributing together for the common good, not just the good of those from any one of our three services and, importantly, for the good of our Outreach program for those in need beyond our walls.

Charlie Chapman, our Treasurer, is working on the budget for next year. He presumes that we will increase our pledges by just 1% and is planning on a budget shortfall of almost $45,000 next year. I would like to prove him wrong. I would like to believe that those of you, who have not yet pledged, would do so this coming year. I would like to believe that those who are new to the congregation will step up and do your part. I would finally hope that those of you, who have been regular contributors to our church, will assess if you can help us with at least 5% more this year. If we do that, we will put our church on a solid financial footing going forward.

You will soon receive a note from the Vestry along with your 2017 Pledge card and a brochure about our church. Please reflect on it, and on St. Patrick’s, and then act on your conviction. Last year many waited till after Thanksgiving to offer their pledge. I would ask you not to wait. We would like to wrap up our Stewardship campaign by mid November and bless the pledges on November 20. Again, thank you all for your support!

SERVICE: So that leads me to my last comment: Service. I mentioned that your service is a strong measure of your Christian spirit. So very many of you donate your time and energy ‘behind the scenes’. No speeches, no robes, no chalice, just devoted and continued hard work on behalf of St. Patrick’s. Today at the 10:30 Service, we will honor the many members of three guilds who work so diligently behind the scenes:

The Altar Guild, the Flower Guild and the Bread Bakers Guild.

I will read the names and if any of you are here, please stand up when I read your name and hold your applause till I read all the names.

It is true: it does take a Village!

Thank you, and God Bless ST. PATRICKS GUILD MEMBERS 2016 ALTAR GUILD SANDY KEITH, CHAIR Cathy Castle Tina Daley Cathy Good Jane Hall Naomi Holm Kay Martinelli Margaret Merchant
